I kept a day by day journal the first 5 years I was enjoying North America. While earning a living,I kept track of where I went, often what I did, feelings I had and various other details. I am writing this blog day by day as I lived it. The month/day I lived it is the same as the month/day I write about it. The years are obviously different...thus the days title: ie: August 30, 1989, 2009.

About Me

My photo
Starting as a preschooler, I remember my Grandfather bringing me rocks from his trips he took after he retired. Each rock had a story to tell. In the sixth grade, I watched a freeway be built and then wondered where all the trucks would go. I remember in high school looking at the mountains and wanting to travel. I did many jobs BEFORE trucking but I always wondered what driving would by like. I really wanted to see things and drive a big truck. So after almost finishing nursing school, a divorce and three cute little kids, I became a truck driver. While earning a living, I found myself enjoying North America and seeing the land and people. NO ONE ENJOYED TRAVELING MORE THAN ME. There are two things I have enjoyed in this life and they are traveling and writing. I use to call myself "Protourist" but my Mother-in-law and Wife would become upset with me as they know I really love THE "travel" and not THE stopping to see things. I now call myself "protraveller"(I like it with a double "L") and my Mother-in-law and Wife are now happy!!! I love to write and this blog gives me the opportunity to share my past and thoughts with the public.

About this blog's layout...BLOG UPDATED ONCE PER DAY...

I follow my journal daily by writing under the daily title, "FIRST 5 YEARS:" The first five years will strictly follow my 5 year journal. If I find the day I am writing about to be boring, I will either write about thoughts I remember(placed under the title of "SECOND 5 YEARS"), write a trucker tale(placed under "A Trucker's Tale"), give a helpful trucker hint, ask a "student driver" question or do something.....When a location appears after the day of the week after "FIRST 5 YEARS:", it is where I am at the start of that day((IE: FIRST 5 YEARS: (Sunday-Kansas City, Missouri))..... I would encourage those that find themselves enjoying North America to follow me day by day.....REMEMBER: THIS IS A BLOG ABOUT WHAT LIFE IS LIKE FOR A TRUCKER THAT DOES NOT HAVE A DAILY ROUTINE ROUTE(called a "dedicated" route). THERE WILL BE MANY TIMES WHEN THE ROUTING, SCENERY AND DAY'S ACTIVITIES WILL BE SIMILAR(boring???) TO PREVIOUS DAYS; THAT'S TRUCKING! THERE WILL BE DAYS WHEN THE ROUTING, SCENERY AND DAY'S ACTIVITIES WILL BE TOTALLY NEW; THAT'S TRUCKING. Frustrations? I mention the frustrations I had as a driver. I loved my job while earning a living and realized that all jobs have frustrations; truck driving is, and was, no different..... Many pictures on this blog can be left-clicked and made larger.....Questions?...Please E-mail PT at fabalt2000@centurylink.net

Blog Dictionaries...

The Trucking Dictionary...words in this dictionary will many times appear highlighted. If a word isn't highlighted or in the blog dictionary and sounds "different", check it out in this dictionary. Please note: Many times when clicking on these dictionaries anywhere in the blog, the first thing that comes up is an advertisement which I have no control over.
The Blog Dictionary...This dictionary contains words I use that aren't "trucker" words and thus not in the "trucking dictionary". I separate them--the dictionaries--in case someone wants to copy the trucking dictionary for personal use. This dictionary also contains names of people(not real names) that I dealt with many times through my trucking career. Blog word found in this dictionary often will be licked to it.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Provo, Utah)

Day started with me waking at the motel I had for three nights. This day was to be a "nothing" day as I eas to start deliveries tomorrow. I decided to drive to the first stop for tomorrow--in Orem(Utah)--today and see if they will take their tired. It wasn't far from my motel so I went over there and they said they would take them. I opened the doors to the trailer and a few tires fall out. The rest of the first row of tires were too close to the rare of the trailer to get out by climbing into it. The two guys helping me to unload got something from the shop and pulled most the first row of tires out. We got their tires off and I was back to my motel room by 10:30 AM MST waiting for tomorrow to get here.

I went to the buffet restaurant, across the street of the motel, for lunch and filed up for the rest of the day. Just spent the rest of the day and evening typing, writing and watching TV....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Saturday-Cortez, Colorado)
I decided to leave Cortez at 4:30 AM MST as I could get past the Utah state scale before it opened. I went past it when it was closed and got to Monticello, Utah at 5:45 AM MST.  Right after turning on Hwy 191 northbound, I parked on the side and went into the convenience store and got me some morning munchies and a soda(soft drink in Canada).  I continued north past the Moab(Utah) and on past Green River(Utah) . Followed Hwy 6 out of Green River through one of the upper deserts of Utah to Price & Helper(Utah).

Got to Provo, Utah just before noon MST.  Checked into the motel I usually stayed at in Provo for three nights.  Took It easy the rest of the day...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday-Amarillo, Texas)
Got up at 8 AM CST at "Just a Truckstop" and had breakfast.  Left for Utah at 9:15 AM CST west on I-40.  Stopped in Santa Rosa for fuel(103 gallons) for then onward.  Got to Albuquerque and took I-25 north a short distance to Hwy 550.  Took Hwy 550 up through Navajo country and then stopped at a convenient store in Bloomfield, New Mexico.  Was there for about 1/2 hour and then west on Hwy 64 to Shiprock and Hwy 666.  Took Hwy 666 north to Cortez and stopped at the truckstop behind the Colorado weigh station at 7 PM MST. Decided to stay there for the night and get an early start tomorrow.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Thursday-Lancaster, Texas)
I was in the terminal building at 7:30 AM CST and reported to the terminal manager that the bobsled was in the yard.  We all went out to look at it.  After looking at it, I noticed that my keys were missing.  I looked for them for over an hour, only to find them behind my comb and wallet in my back pocket.

I sat around the terminal until it was my turn for a load.  Dispatch saved the Salt Lake City tire load for me and I took it.

I left for Utah at 5 PM CST taking I-20 west to Hwy 287 northeast.  Hit the traffic through Fort Worth and took a break at the small truckstop at Vernon, Texas.  Got to the "Just a Truckstop" in Amarillo, Texas minutes before midnight and shut down for the night...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Wednesday-traveling in Texas)
Started my day traveling south on I-35, getting to San Antonio and the JC Penny's center at 4:30 AM CST.  I dropped the trailer and called night dispatch; I was to get a return load from JC Penny's to our Lancaster terminal.  I got ahold of Peggy and she wouldn't let me have the return load, siting the planners had put something on the computer.  I wasn't happy but who said I had to be.  I just got..."Call back in the morning for a load".

I called the terminal manager at Lancaster as he was the one that said I would get the return load.  He said that he would straighten things up and told me to call him later.  I grabbed am empty trailer and went over the the "Just a Truckstop" in San Antonio.  At 2:30 PM CST I got a load to pick up tomorrow.  I had that load taken away from me and a load given to me that will take me to Lancaster.

The load I got....Pick up the US Olympic Bobsled and take it to Lancaster, Texas for a relay.  I went over to where I was told and three fellows put the bobshed in the trailer and secured it.  I talked with the guys and found that two of them were the ones that did the Olympics with that bobsled.

I left for Lancaster at 5 PM CST heading for Lancaster.  Got to the I-35E and I-35W split and took the I-35E wing.  Shortly after taking the I-35E, I came to the Italy, Texas exit and took a break at the convenience store and small truckstop.  Continued up to our Lancaster terminal and fueled(83 gallons) before shutting down for the night....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Tuesday-Dallas, Texas)
I was up and waiting to be unloaded when the employees showed up for work.  I was told which dock to back up to and did.  I walked to the back of the trail, on the dock, and was notified that I had to unload the trailer.  OH BOY!!!!  Unloading it wasn't hard but the load consisted of freshly painted 55 gallon drums.  The got the trailed unloaded by 9:10 AM CST but had markings of the paint on me as some of it was not completely dry.

Called local dispatch and was told to go to the Lancaster(Dallas) terminal where I would get another load.  I got to the terminal and dispatch, knowing I liked the loads of tires to Salt Lake City, told me that they had a load there.  The problem was that the load didn't deliver until next Tuesday.  The asked if I would do the Dallas to San Antonio nightly run once or twice and then I could have the Salt Lake load.  I agreed.

The load came in at 10:30 PM CST and I was off by 10:45 PM CST. I figured that I would have enough fuel to go down to San Antonio and back to Lancaster, so I will wait to fuel.  Don't remember where I was exactly when midnight hit but I was on I-35 going south.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Lee's Summit, Missouri)
I was woken up by the construction workers that would be needing these refrigeration units i was carrying. The foreman of the project said that they wouldn't need them for a few days and so they wouldn't be unloading them. I call the local dispatch in Kansas City and they told me to just bring them to the Kansas City terminal yard and drop them---I did.

At the yard, the Kansas City dispatch gave me a light load(less than 5,000 lbs)going to Dallas. I left the Kansas City terminal around 11 AM CST after fueling(98 gallons) and headed down I-35 to Oklahoma City for dinner at 5 PM CST. After dinner(6:30 PM CST). I headed down I-35 again and got to Dallass and the customers at 10:30 PM CST. They were all closed up so I just parked the truck and went to sleep...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Sunday-Kingdom City, Missouri)
My daughter came and got me for church. While at church, a few of my friends were telling me of a truck that had overtured and spilt its load of frozen orange juice. They told me how they went and helped clean it up and because the cargo was no longer consided "good", they got to keep all the orange juice they could carry....

Spent the day with the kids until around 6 PM CST when I left the truckstop and headed for Lee's Summit, Mssouri, and the customer.

Got to Lee's Summit around 8:30 PM CST and found the customer; they were having me drop the refrgerator units of at the store construction site...makes sense to me...

Went to bed and to sleep while my TV was playing...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Saturday-Bridgeton, Missouri)
I had pulled into the shipper's yard just before my day started. The job here was very simple; drop my empty trailer in their empty trailer lot and pick up my assigned trailer. Got my assigned trailer and checked the paperwork to make sure it was going to Lee's Summit for Monday. It was the correct trailer so I picked it up and did a vehicle inspection. Up dated my logbook and was on I-70 westbound by 12:45 AM CST.

Drove to the truckstop at the Truxford exit(exit 188) and settled in for the night. I slept until 9:30 AM CST and then just laid there for awhile. Didn't eat breakfast before taking off for Kingdom City, Missouri. Got to Kingdom City around noon and then called my kids(they lived in Fulton, Missouri--a few miles south of me). My daughter and youngest son came up and we had lunch together. My oldest son was wrapped up in some activity all day. Hung out with the kids the rest of the day and then went back to my truck and went to sleep...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday-Tulsa, Oklahoma)
Woke and checked in with dispatch...got the "call back in an hour". I got that until 3:30 PM CST when dispatch said to deadhead to Bridgeton, Missouri and pick up a load of refrigerator units for Maryland. I got started heading northeast on I-44 into Missouri, stopping at our terminal. I fuels(34 gallons) and checked in with dispatch. I had met "Bar-B-Que"(his handle) before taking with dispatch and found that he had a load to pick up where I did. The only difference was that his load was going to Lee's Summit, Missouri; my was going to Maryland. He asked to trade loads and I said OK. Dispatch reassigned our loads and then we were off to Bridgeton, up I-44, at 7 PM CST.

We took I-270(westside of St. Louis) north to Bridgeton and were at the customer's as the day ended at midnight...

September 19, 1991, 2011

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Thursday-Troy, Illinois)
Left the truckstop in Troy at 3:30 AM CST and headed for Missouri on I-70. Crossed the Missouri River and got on I-44 and headed for Joplin(Missouri). After a short break on I-44, I got to our terminal in Joplin at 9 AM CST.

I had some business to take care of so I took care of it. I was to be in Tulsa, Oklahoma at 1 PM CST so I was out of the terminal by 11 AM CST after doing my business and fueling(134 gallons). Entered Oklahoma and shot down I-44 to Tulsa where I was at the customer at 1 PM CST. They unloaded me and I was off for the truckstop off I-44 on the northeast corner of Tulsa.

I played around as there was no load for me. I went to the restaurant and nothing was happening. Talked with the waitress and cashier for 4 hours. Cathy & Glenda were real fun. Cathy was the waitress and asked me to fill out an evaluation of her.. I filled out 9 of them and all were great....Went out to bed at 7 PM...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Wednesday-Taylor, Michigan)
My sleeping was thrown off these last couple of days co I went out to sleep just after my new day started I was up, after some poor sleep, by 6 AM EST. I checked in with the local dispatch and they changed my assignment. They had a load of glass in the yard that had to get going so.....I got it, fueled(153 gallons) and was heading south on I-75 by 6:30 AM EST. I thought shortly after stating that I didn't want to go the way I was going. I got to I-275(south of Detroit) and went north on it to I-94. At I-94 I went west and stopped at "Just a Truckstop" in Lake Station, Indiana for lunch. Left Lake Station at 11:30 AM CST west on I-80 to I-55. Went south on I-55 and stopped at Funk's Grove rest area for a short break--I like writing "Funk's Grove" in my logbook--Went on to the truckstop in Troy, Illinios where I shut down for the night at 5:30 PM CST...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Tuesday-traveling Ohio)
Had just crossed the Indiana/Ohio border and heading east on I-70 as my day started at midnight. About 30 minutes into Ohio, My driving time went from legal to illegal; I had run out of legal driving time. I wanted to keep going as I was feeling fine.

I kept going east on I-70 and called on the CB radio to drivers that had been going west. I wanted to find out if anyone knew of the Ohio scale house on northbound I-71 being open or closed. The word was that it was open and weighing. I decided to go around it as I didn't need to take a chance on having my logbook checked at the scales. I decided to, at exit 79, take Hwy 42 north through Plain City(Ohio) and onto Delaware(Ohio). I then took Hwy 37 east to I-71 where I was then north of the scale house.

I took I-71 north to I-271 and went north on it. Ended up in Maple Heights(Cleveland suburbs). Pulled up outside the customers gate at 5 AM EST and since I had been there before I knew that they opened at 5:30 AM EST. I was number 3 in line and I just stayed up and at the wheel until they told me what dock to back into.

The had me back up to dock 5 and I was unloaded by 7:30 AM EST. I told dispatch that I was tired and that I wanted to sleep. I found a K-Mart parking lot and went to sleep not far from their loading docks--so they might think I had business there. I woke at 3 PM EST and called dispatch. I was given a load to pick up in Dearborn, Michigan tomorrow. Soooo, I left Maple Heights on I-480 westbound. It took me to I-80(toll road) and I continued to I-280, south of Toledo, Ohio. I stopped at the "Just a Truckstop" at I-280 and I-80 for dinner at 5:15 PM EST. I wasn't in any hurry so I ate and checked out their movies that were playing; nothing looked exciting to me...I left up I-280 to I-75 and took that north into Michigan and then to our Taylor(Detroit) terminal. I stopped at the terminal and went inside to talk and watch their TV...I was doing that when my day ended...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Kansas City, Missouri)
Up at 6 AM CST and fueled(177 gallons). Sat around the terminal lounge until I got called to the dispatcher's window at 9:55 AM CST. I had to take an empty trailer to the Lipton Soup Plant in Independence, Missouri and pick up a loaded trailer of salad dressing going to Maple Heights(Cleveland), Ohio. I got the salad dressing and headed east on I-70 at 11:30 AM CST. I wasn't running with anyone, so I just kinda day dreamed at I went...Took the I-270 over the north part of St.louis and it hooked into I-70 in Illinois. Just kept going to our fuel stop in Effingham, Illinois. Had the buffet dinner at around 5:30 PM CST and headed east again on I-70.

Stopped at the first rest area over the Ohio/Indiana border at 11:15 PM EST for a short break and was heading east again by midnight...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Sunday-Kansas City, Missouri)
I didn't go anywhere today and ended up just sitting around the terminal...The emost exciting part of the day way us guys, in the terminal lounge, watching a female driver get into her truck cab while wearing a tight long dress; the cab and long tight dress DON'T go together....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Saturday-South St. Paul, Minnesota)
I was up at 12:45 AM CST ant got PG(driver I met yesterday) up as planned. We were heading west on I-494 by 2 AM CST and got on I-35E going south. We talked on the CB radio and stopped at the little truckstop at the Williams, Iowa exit at 4:45 AM CST.

We went into the restaurant to get some breakfast and met an interesting waitress. She was medium height, somewhat attractive but seemed to be unable to perform the job of a waitress. We got our breakfast but we both felt that it got to us through a miracle. Anyway, we continued down I-35 through Urbandale(Iowa) and stopped for 50 gallons of fuel. Then down into Missouri. We continued to our terminal in Kansas City, Missouri and got there at 10 AM CST. While at the terminal, I gave my load to another driver that needed to go to Joplin. I went out to my tractor and went to sleep as I was tired.

I got up and was in the terminal by 8 PM CST and got on the TRB. No loads going out today so I spent the end of the day with paperwork over the terminal table I was sitting at...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday-Mendota, illinois)
I was up and off at 12:30 AM, heading for Green Bay, Wisconsin. I headed up I-39 past Rockford(Illinois) into Wisconsin. Right over the border I came to Beloit. Took I-43 out of Beloit and headed toward Milwaukee. Kept on I-43 up the coast of Lake Michigan where the coastline--enjoyed the view from the interstate--was visable several times before going past Manitowoc(Wisconsin). Found the receiver--a sheltered workshop for the handicapped--on the southside of Green Bay and pulled up to their dock at 5:30 AM CST. No one was around so I just did my paperwork and vehicle inspection for the day.

When the employees came in to unload me, I watched them. I had a whole trailer of box packing material, the air bubble type...When they were finished, I swept out the trailer and had several squares of air bubbles to keep and pop for a while...I was really to leave Green Bay at 9:30 AM CST, after calling dispatch and getting deadheaded to Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

I headed west on Hwy 29, driving past Wausau(Wisconsin) to Eau Claire. This stretch had some of the most beautiful woods--forests--I had ever seen...I loved the scenery!!!!

Got to the tire plant in Eau Claire at 1:15 PM CST. Talking to the guard, I found that this plant was "Haunted". I had a "drop & hook" situation so I dropped my empty trailer and hooked up to my assigned trailer, the one going to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I called dispatch after my pickup and was told to take the load to the Joplin terminal an drop it. I was gone from Eau Claire by 2:10 PM CST. I went northwest on I-94 and crossed into Minnesota. I had to go over the Minnesota scales but they didn't ask me to stop for anything...

I stopped at the truckstop(it reminded me of the TV comedy "Hee Haw") southeast of St. Paul and decided to wait there until tomorrow, while I did. I went into the restaurant and met one of our drivers with the handle "Perfect Gentleman" and he said to just call him "PG". Well PG was just finishing up his meal before going to get his load in Fridley, Minnesota. I knew where he was going and he had never been there before So I went with him. He said he was going back to the truckstop after the pickup to get some sleep and so I could get back to my truck. The day ended with me snoring...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Thursday-Joplin, Missouri)
I parked right after midnight and went to sleep. I was up at 7 AM CST, checked in with dispatch, fueled(115 gallons) and left norteast on I-44 by 7:45 AM...

Took I-44 to St, Louis and the Mississippi River, crossing the River on I-55 north. Followed I-55 north to Bloomington(Illinois) where I jumped on I-39 north. Drove to Mendota, Illinois and called it a night....

September 11, 1991, 2011

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Wednesday-Joplin, Missouri)
I left for Laredo, Texas at 12:30 AM CST. I continued southwest on I-44 into Oklahoma and followed it to Big Cabin(Oklahoma). At Big Cabin, I took I-69 south and kept my speed up. I went through a number of small towns and than hit Muskogee. On down I went toward Texas through McAlester and Atoka, ending up at a truckstop right over the Red River in Denison(Texas) at 6 AM CST.

I crept into a time violation by not stopping earlier in Oklahoma. I sat in my seat and thought about continuing on to Lancaste; I was already in violation and I wasn't feeling tired. I decided to go as I have a hard time sleeping when I feel I need to go...

I had decided to go on to our Lacaster terminal and there get my sleep. I was at the terminal at 8 AM CST and decided to just go to sleep. I adjusted my logbook to show a long, legal break in Stringtown, Oklahoma. I then put me into Lancaster at the time I sould have been here had I broke in Stringtown.

I woke from my sleep and went into the terminal building around 4 PM CST. I got talking to the drivers and one offered to trade me a load to Green Bay, Wisconsin. for my Laredo one. I took it.

It was 5 PM CST when I pulled out and traveled back up I-35E , Hwy 75, Hwy69 and I-44 and ended up in the Joplin.Missouri terminal just before midnight...

September 10, 1991, 2011

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Tuesday-traveling Indiana)
My day started as I was traveling west on I-70 through Indianapolis. I stopped in Monrovia(Indiana) for fuel(152 gallons) and then it was off again.

Dispatch gave me until 4 AM CST to get the load to Pocahontas to relay; I got it there at 3 AM CST. I tapped on the tractor of the driver I was swapping with. He took my trailer and was gone. I really wasnt tired so I went into the restaurant.....Wow..nothing going on except a poker game. The restaurant had no "eaters" so the cook, waitress and two drivers(from my company) were playing poker. I watched the game players for a short while and than went out to my bed.

I slept until 10:30 AM CST and than called dispatch. Found I had a load to Laredo, Texas coming in before 5 PM CST; it came in at 4:30 PM CST. I got hooked up and did what I had to do. I was gone by 5 PM CST heading west on I-70. It wasn't long before I got to Missouri and crossed the Mississippi River into St. Louis. In St. Louis, I took I-44 southwest over one of the two places in the US that I felt felt like a roller coaster. Met up with "Three Step"--his handle--who drove for my company and going my way. We ran together and talked all the way to our terminal in Joplin, Missouri. We got in at 11 PM CST and hung around the terminal until the end of the day....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Cincinnati, Ohio)
The night wasn't peaceful as I felt that I woke every few minutes thinking someone was wanting to unload me...no luck.. 6:30 AM EST came and I was up and ready to get going but...no one to unload me yet. It wasn't long and the unloader showed up but took him time with unloading me. It was just before 10 AM EST when he finally signed my paperwork that he got his goods.

Called dispatch for my next load and was told to go to Columbus(Ohio) and this pick-up had an appointment time of 8 PM EST. The drive up I-71 was a slow one as there was no hurry. I was up to the shipping company on the south side of Columbus at 5:30 PM EST and checked in with shipping. I sat around until 7:45 PM EST when a guy came out and told me to back up to dock #4. I did and they had me loaded in an hour. I called dispatch when loaded and was told to take the trailer to Pocahontas, Illinois and relay it. After the phone call, I took off west on I-70. There wasn't much to driving tonight, even the moon was just a sliver in the sky. As my day was ending, I was entering the eastern side of Indianapolis, Indiana on I-70....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Sunday-Monrovia, Indiana)
I stayed up last night and watched some TV on my TV...Woke up around 7:30 AM EST and just cleaned my truck out. Walked into the restaurant and found a couple of our drivers eating so I sat down. We talked until about 10:30 AM EST when I decided to call the receiver--for tomorrow--for directions. I called and the receiver told me that is I got to his unloading dock by 2 PM EST he would unload me.

I pulled out of the truckstop before 11 AM EST heading east on I-70. Got to the I-74 and turned south, following it around the bottom of the loop(Indianapolis) and then toward Cincinnati, Ohio. I kept my speed up and took no breals as I knew I could get to the receiver by 2 PM EST. I got into Ohio and to I-275 and took it east. When I got to I-75, I went south and found the receiver.

I checked in with the guard and was at the unloading dock by 1:45 PM EST. I MADE IT!!!! The guy that said he'd unload....... he didn't wait for me. I walked to the guard shack and was told I could stay backed up to the dock until tomorrow morning. I was quite frustrated as I was hoping to possibly getting out of Cincinnati tonight.....didn't happe

I ate munchies, wrote and watched my TV until I fell asleep. It wasn't too late when I was snoring away...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Saturday-Kansas City, Missouri)
Another driving day but aren't planning on the total miles I could drive. I was up around 6 AM CST washing my laundry at the terminal clothes watching area. Washed clothes, watched the news and talked to whoever needed talking to until 8:30 AM CST. Went to my truck, did the vehicle inspection and updated my logbook to reflect the fueling(96 gallons) I did before I left the terminal.

I pulled onto I-70 at a little before 9:30 AM CST and headed east. It was an "all right" day but nothing special. I Stopped in Kingdom City, Missouri for lunch at McDonalds as my son(from Fulton) worked and was there. I was there about an hour and then headed east on I-70 again. Got close to St. Louis and I took I-270 over the top of St. Louis and into Illinois. About 15 miles and I-270 met up with I-70 again....then it was east on I-70 though the state. FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday-Bennett, Colorado)
Was up and moving east by 8:30 AM MST after fueling(105 gallons) . It was a day on the Colorado and Kansas flatlands. I had to stop to be weighted at the Colorado and Kansas scales. At 10:30 AM MST, I pulled into the convenience store and truckstop for a break. I was there for a half hour and then on east I went. Followed I-70 east to Hays(Kansas) where I stopped for dinner a little after 3 PM CST. After dinner, I walked to the Wal-Mart where I got a couple t-shirts from the Univerty of Kansas and Kansas State University. each T-shirt(one with a parrot; the other with a bear cub) had printed on it, "we bad!". Got them tor the kids of my girl friend in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Left Hays at 5:30 PM CST with a full tummy and afew things bought at Wal-Mart. Around the middle Of Kansas, the roads kinda get into hilly areas. Stayed on I-70 to Kansas City where I pulled into our terminal at 10 PM CST. I didn't do much this evening except go to sleep....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Thursday-"Little" Bonanza, Utah)
I was up before anyone showed up to work. This little Bonanza here only a mining operation as the population is "0"(Big Bonanza had a population of "9"). I was up and walking around when the bus carrying the workers came in. I was the only truck until they finished loading me. As they were finishing unloading me, another truck from my company pulled in. It was being driven by "Rain Man"--his handle--and what was interesting was that he hadn't brought anything to eat or drink...I ended up giving him water and some munchies...

We both were loaded and given the directions(I had them before when I stopped here)to take a mining road(still not on the map and saved us at least 50 miles) over to Hwy 64 in Colorado. We followed Hwy 64 southeast to Rangely and then into Meeker(Colorado) where we were hoping to get something to eat. We found a bar that served lunch and it was about 11:30 AM MST. We walked in and found the place empty of customers. We were told that lunch started at noon. For some reason we did not want to wait; we pressed on down Hwy 13. It was 12:45 PM MST when we pulled into Rifle(Colorado) and stopped at a fast food restaurant. We were heading east on I-70, through the mountains at 1:30 PM MST.

It was a rough afternoon as both Rain Man and I had full loads--each truck weighing around 79,600 lbs--and the mountains almost became a game that we had to win. Up and down--seemed to never end-- on the truck's gears was the order of the day. Went past Vail(Colorado) and didn't enjoy it at all(I usually enjoy the scenery).

As we were getting close to the steep downgrade before Denver(Colorado), Rain Man informed me that he may have been having brake problems with his trailer. Since the downgrade before Denver isn't the place to find out there was a problem, Rain Man pulled into a truck parking area and--I guess, as I didn't stop--checked things out. We had no Jake brakes on our trucks.

The downgrade was long and slow. I had good control of my unit--even with the weight--until the last six miles. I got thinking we were close to being done and kind of took liberties that could have cost me dearly. By the time I got to the bottom of the mountain, I showed signs my brakes were beginning to fade badly. Luckily there were few vehicles in front and I hadn't been going too fast. I believe my brakes were smoking but not bad...

Got through the Denver area and went on to Bennett, Colorado where we had a fuel stop. It had been a wild day so I called it quits for the day and went to sleep...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Wednesday-Bountiful, Utah)
Day after the day after Labor Day and it's time to go back to work. I had my Sister take me back to my truck sitting in the extra McDonalds parking lot at the Centerville(Utah) exit off I-15. Time was around 6:30 AM MST when I got back to the truck. Before I left for Salt Lake City, I got my logbook caught up and my vehicle inspection done.

I got to Salt Lake City by going down I-15. Found their downtown store--this was my first stop for the day--was backed up to the unloading door by 7:30 AM MST. After that store I went to the Salt Lake City fuel stop and fueled(118 gallons). I then went back to Bountiful and unloaded their tires. The final stop was in Roy(Utah) were I was empty at 3:45 PM MST.

I called dispatch for my next load and was told to go to Bonaza, Utah(Been there before) for a load going to Cincinnati, Ohio. I was ready...

I traveled down I-15 to I-40, just south of Salt Lake, and took it up into the mountains. Went past Park City and onto Highway 40 where I turned south heading toward Heber City. Once I got through Heber City, I traveled --what I call--the top of the world. The moon was only half full but it was bight as could be anyway. It was a beauiful night while traveling along the top of the world...

Got to Vernal, Utah and stopped to get me a big soda(soft drink in Canada) and some Munchies. I got so much that that check out clerk asked me if I storing goodies. I told her that I was getting ready to go to "Nowhere", Utah as I'd been to Bonanza, Utah before. Got back in my truck and went south on Hwy 45 from Vernal. Got to "Little" Bonanza--population: 0--at 11:30 PM MST and just parked my truck in front of the main building and went to bed...Note: Big Bonanza had a population of "9"

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday(Labor Day)-Bountiful, Utah)
I had today and tomorrow off and will deliver in Salt Lake City, Bountiful and Roy Wednesday. Since it was a holiday, we, my Sister's Family and I went up to the ski resort at Park City above Salt Lake City. We enjoyed the day there and had a blast. The mountains don't have snow to ski on, but the resort built runners for sleds to slide down the mountains. To get to the top of the slides, one has to take the ski lifts. Afterwards, bought some of my favorite candy--almond barque--from one the the candy stores. went back to their home and spent the evening...not a "truckin'" day but a fun one...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Sunday-Provo, Utah)
Had the day off. I checked out of the motel and I took my rig up I-15 to Centerville(Utah) where I parked it in the McDonald's parking lot that's off I-15. My sister came from Bountiful--not far--and picked me up. McDonald's said I could park the truck on their property for a few days. Just spent the rest of the day with relatives...
