FIRST 5 YEARS:(Saturday-Tulsa, Oklahoma)
Found the Sears warehouse as my day started. Parked outside the warehouse, set my alarm clock for 4:45 AM CST and laid down for a nap. I had been here before and knew they get started early.
Sure enough, they were there to start unloading 5 AM CST and had me back up to the docks. I was unloaded by 7 AM CST and went to the truckstop on the northeast corner of Tulsa.
After a short nap, I called dispatch and found I had a load to Fredonia, New York waiting for me at Kerr Glass(Sand Springs, Oklahoma). I picked up the load and drove up I-44 to Joplin, Missouri and made my mandantory stop for a truck inspection. Fueled(83 gallons).
I left Joplin and stopped in Marshfield(Missouri), exit 100, and enjoyed dinner at one of the best bar-b-que restaurant I know of. Continued up I-44, through St. Louis and into Illinois. I stopped at our drop yard in Pocahontas(Illinois) to see if we had any drivers to run with; found none. Decided to lay down for my nights rest as it was close to midnight...
I kept a day by day journal the first 5 years I was enjoying North America. While earning a living,I kept track of where I went, often what I did, feelings I had and various other details. I am writing this blog day by day as I lived it. The month/day I lived it is the same as the month/day I write about it. The years are obviously different...thus the days title: ie: August 30, 1989, 2009.
About Me
- The Protraveller...
- Starting as a preschooler, I remember my Grandfather bringing me rocks from his trips he took after he retired. Each rock had a story to tell. In the sixth grade, I watched a freeway be built and then wondered where all the trucks would go. I remember in high school looking at the mountains and wanting to travel. I did many jobs BEFORE trucking but I always wondered what driving would by like. I really wanted to see things and drive a big truck. So after almost finishing nursing school, a divorce and three cute little kids, I became a truck driver. While earning a living, I found myself enjoying North America and seeing the land and people. NO ONE ENJOYED TRAVELING MORE THAN ME. There are two things I have enjoyed in this life and they are traveling and writing. I use to call myself "Protourist" but my Mother-in-law and Wife would become upset with me as they know I really love THE "travel" and not THE stopping to see things. I now call myself "protraveller"(I like it with a double "L") and my Mother-in-law and Wife are now happy!!! I love to write and this blog gives me the opportunity to share my past and thoughts with the public.
About this blog's layout...BLOG UPDATED ONCE PER DAY...
I follow my journal daily by writing under the daily title, "FIRST 5 YEARS:" The first five years will strictly follow my 5 year journal. If I find the day I am writing about to be boring, I will either write about thoughts I remember(placed under the title of "SECOND 5 YEARS"), write a trucker tale(placed under "A Trucker's Tale"), give a helpful trucker hint, ask a "student driver" question or do something.....When a location appears after the day of the week after "FIRST 5 YEARS:", it is where I am at the start of that day((IE: FIRST 5 YEARS: (Sunday-Kansas City, Missouri))..... I would encourage those that find themselves enjoying North America to follow me day by day.....REMEMBER: THIS IS A BLOG ABOUT WHAT LIFE IS LIKE FOR A TRUCKER THAT DOES NOT HAVE A DAILY ROUTINE ROUTE(called a "dedicated" route). THERE WILL BE MANY TIMES WHEN THE ROUTING, SCENERY AND DAY'S ACTIVITIES WILL BE SIMILAR(boring???) TO PREVIOUS DAYS; THAT'S TRUCKING! THERE WILL BE DAYS WHEN THE ROUTING, SCENERY AND DAY'S ACTIVITIES WILL BE TOTALLY NEW; THAT'S TRUCKING. Frustrations? I mention the frustrations I had as a driver. I loved my job while earning a living and realized that all jobs have frustrations; truck driving is, and was, no different..... Many pictures on this blog can be left-clicked and made larger.....Questions?...Please E-mail PT at fabalt2000@centurylink.net
Blog Dictionaries...
The Trucking Dictionary...words in this dictionary will many times appear highlighted. If a word isn't highlighted or in the blog dictionary and sounds "different", check it out in this dictionary. Please note: Many times when clicking on these dictionaries anywhere in the blog, the first thing that comes up is an advertisement which I have no control over.
The Blog Dictionary...This dictionary contains words I use that aren't "trucker" words and thus not in the "trucking dictionary". I separate them--the dictionaries--in case someone wants to copy the trucking dictionary for personal use. This dictionary also contains names of people(not real names) that I dealt with many times through my trucking career. Blog word found in this dictionary often will be licked to it.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday-Memphis, Tennessee)
Took a load of Sears stuff going to Tulsa, Oklahoma that loads at 3 PM CST. Went to Shoney's for lunch and then back tto the terminal for fuel.
I was at Sears being loaded by 2:30 PM CST and done and ready to leave by 4:30 PM CST. I stopped at "Just a Truckstop" for a fast bite to eat and then onto Tulsa. When I got to Little Rock, Arkansas I hit rain and wind. I remembered feeling I was going to blow over at exit 81 west bound on I-40. I stopped for a short break at the rest area and then headed west again.
I got to the Muskogee Turnpike and took it to Tulsa where I found my delivery point at Midnight...

Day started with me being unloaded at FedEx. They were done unloading me at 1:15 AM CST. I called dispatch and was told to go to our Memphis terminal, which I did. Went to sleep and when I got up around 10 AM CST I found that I was going to be here until tomorrow...Stayed at the terminal except when I went to eat...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Wednesday-traveling Texas)
As my day started, I had just passed through Freer, Texas(home of the Rattlesnake festival)and continued my long trip-short trip compared to with my every day life--toward Houson. I got pretty good sleep yesterday--off and on--and I had excellent directions to the receiver of my load. I found my destination on the northside of Houston at 5:15 AM CST. I also found two other drivers from my company that got there before me; we all waited on the street until the company opened.
The other two drivers got unloaded and called dispatch for new loads. Both got loads out of Houston they claimed to not really want. I got unloaded and called, getting a load of Federal Express Airfreight to Memphis, Tennessee.
I had deliveried not far from the Fed Ex loading location. I got to Fed Ex and they had me dock for loading. I was out of there by 12:30 PM CST, heading north on Hwy 59, heading for Memphis.
I connected with I-30 east and then to I-40 east to Memphis. They wanted me there at 12:30 AM CST tomorrow but I was there being unloaded as my day ended at midnight...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Tuesday-Laredo, Texas)
(see yesterday)When Sundance and I were both awake, I took his to UPS and he mailed several boxes to his home. We then went to eat and then I took him to the company terminal. Sundance was a likeable guy and soon found a ride north toward home.
I called Arlena and she wanted to know if I wanted to go to a late lunch; I didn't. I decided to take a nap and while napping, was woken up with a load.
The load I was given was to Houston. I was not all excited by the load but "kept the faith" that some good was waiting for me in Houston.....I got my trailer & did my vehicle inspection; I headed toward Houston at 11 PM CST.....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Laredo, Texas)
I was sharing a motel room with Sundance. We both woke up around 8 AM CST. Sundance called his parents and learned that the Missouri Department of Revenue has revoked his Drivers' license for 2 months because of too many traffic violations(three ticket in 18 months). He called our companies main office and found him immediately terminated.
With the termination, the company gave him a choice of riding to his home terminal by bus or company truck; he took the company truck option. He couldn't drive his tractor back to the terminal; the terminal sent a couple drivers to get it. My friend Pam came by the motel room and helped Sundance and I unload his tractor. After the unloading and the other drivers getting his tractor, I took Sundance and Pam to eat at my favorite(at that time) Chinese Restaurant.
Pam left for her home and I helped Sundance pack and get ready to mail alot of his stuff to his home(company paid for most the mailing). I finally went to sleep while he continued to pack....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday-Fort Stockton, Texas)
I started my day by getting to the truckstop in Fort Stockton while I was driving to Laredo with two other drivers from our company.
We didn't stay at the truckstop long and by 12:30 AM CST we were headed southeast on Hwy 285. It was close to 2 AM CST when we got to Sanderson, Texas and I decided to stop for some sleep. The other two drivers continued on toward Laredo. I found a parking spot by a closed down convienence store having a phone on a post and parked there. I slept well and undistributed waking up at 10 AM CST. I called into dispatch and reported my position(a da requirement). Continued down Hwy 90, passed the museum for Judge Roy Bean, the Hanging Judge and onto Del Rio(Texas).
In Del Rio, I stopped and bought a bucket of chicken at "KFC"s and then headed for Eagle Pass(Texas) down Hwy 277...while eating my chicken. Time was 12:45 PM CST went I left Del Rio.
At Carriizo Springs(Texas)--a "pretty" little town--I took Hwy 83 to I-35 and then ended up in Laredo. It was 4:15 PM CST when I got to our Laredo terminal and I checked with dispatch. They told me to just turn my paperwork over to them and drop my trailer in the yard...that I did.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Thursday-entering Arizona)
Happily driving east and entering Arizona as my day started. I was really enjoying the full moon and it's effects on what I saw in the desert. Just a great night. "Flew" through the Phoenix, Arizona area and stopped for the rest of the night at our fuel stop in Casa Grande, Arizona(4:30 AM MST).
I left the fuel stop at 1 PM MST and headed for El Paso, Texas. Went past Benson, Arizonia before the long drive up into the mountains, past the rest area of Texas Canyon(Arizona) and into the flat interstate highway(10) of New Mexico. Got to our El Paso terminal at 7 PM MST where I fueled(138 gallons). I met up with two other drivers going to Laredo, Texas and we decided to run together. We headed east on I-10 and got to the Fort Stockton truckstop as our day ended at midnight CST....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Wednesday-Ontario, California)
I was stuck at the truckstop most of the day waiting for a load. I did have a huge breakfast from the truckstop's buffet.
I finally got a load that I needed to pick up in the downtown area of Los Angeles. I fueled--since this was a fuelstop--and headed for the pickup. Got to the pickup at 2:30 PM PST and they started to load me from the street. Several guys were involved and the loading went quite rapidly. I was loaded and ready to go by 4:30 PM PST. There was a place just down the street from them were I could weigh my truck as the paperwork--for the load--was showing 41, 398 lbs. I got the truck weighed and I was legal all the way around. This weighing station guy was very nice and let me have a soda(soft drink in Canada) and a bunch of suckers when I left....he said it was just what he did....
After getting the truck weighed, I left for Laredo, Texas(the destination of this load) north on I-710 to east on I-10. As I drove east into the desest during the night hours, I had a big beautiful full moon to look at. My day ended as I was getting very close to Blythe, California and the Arizona border...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Barstow, California)
I got up early this morning, about 5:00 AM PST and headed for my delivery point in Rancho Cucamonga, California. I checked in with the receiver and they had me back up to the dock immediately whereupon they unloaded my trailer. It didn't take long to unload and I was done by 10:00 AM PST. I called dispatch and let them know I was empty but they did not have another load for me at that time.
I drove over to our fuel stop in Ontario, California, where I stayed for the night as there was no load for me this day...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Parowan Utah)
I woke up about 4:00 AM MST and headed out for Mesquite, Nevada, getting there about 5 AM PST. I stopped at the truck parking spot for the Peppermill Casino. I had a good parking spot, it was early, I was still tired so I went back to bed.
My stepfather woke me up around 7:30 AM PST by knocking on my door. We went over to his home as sought his wife, my stepmother, and their dogs. After a nice visit he took me back to my truck and I ate at the casino buffet. The buffet was a really good; by a especially liked the thick pork chops and had several.
I must admit that I don't gamble much but I did gamble with a few nickels. I actually walked out of the casino $2.00 richer, even after eating, then when I walked in.
I got in by truck and headed for Las Vegas, Nevada. I just drove through the city and headed for California. I drove to our fuel stop in Barstow, California and stopped for the night...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Sunday-Rawlins, Wyoming)
O'clock this morning with no snow on the ground but the very cold and windy. I went into the truck stop and had breakfast; then started at west on interstate 80 toward Salt Lake City. Once I got to interstate 84 in Utah I took it to the great Salt Lake Valley. Just as I was exiting in the mountains I got on highway 89 going south. I stopped in Bountiful, Utah and visited my relatives for an hour. There was a storm coming south that I wanted it beat. I followed interstate 15 south and the storm finally caught me when I got to Beaver, Utah. When the storm caught me it was all rain and no snow or ice.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday-Hamilton, Ontario)
Last night when I got to the shipper I backed my trailer up to the dock with my doors open. This morning I was woken up by the trailer shaking, they were loading me. I saw two other company trucks parked on the street which it come in during the night. I checked on my a load and found it was diet food going to Ontario, California. They finished loading me and I was on my way toward Windsor/Detroit by way of highway 403 and then highway 401.
American customs wanted to look at my load. I backed up to the dock, open my doors, and the agent looked at one box and then told me I was OK to go. It turns out that the third truck loaded that day had a loaded of food rejected by customs and had to return to the shipper.
I got across the border and to our terminal Taylor, Michigan around 10:30 AM EST. I fueled(98 gallons), parked my truck and walked into the terminal. Told everyone the load I had and everybody wanted it. I did not trade it. It was due Tuesday.
I followed interstate 94 to interstate 80 at continued to Peru, Illinois where I stopped for my long break; spent the night here...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Thursday-Oshawa, Ontario)
I was up around six but had to wait till 7:00 AM EST to get unloaded. I was unloaded in about 15 minutes as a fork truck went into the trailer and just grabbed the stuff. I pulled away from the dock and took my time before calling dispatch at 8:30 AM EST. They had nothing for me to do and told me to call back in an hour.
It was about 1:00 PM EST and when I was told I had a load to pick up tomorrow morning. I was to go to Hamilton, Ontario and pick up a load going to Southern California. I got to Hamilton and found the customer after dark. I backed up to the dock and decided to walk around and see if I could find a phone to call dispatch. After a short walk I found a doughnut shop that was open and had a phone. I called dispatch and let them know I was at my pick up destination. I then bought some doughnuts which were put into a little box. I put the box under my arm and then a left for my truck.
As I was walking back to my truck I followed a man who was walking in front of me. I followed him as he turned the corner and walked toward my truck. After a minute or two, the man turned to me and insisted on knowing what I was carrying under my arm. For some reason he thought I was following him to cause him bodily damage. He was rather irritated but I assured him I ment him no harm. I show them my doughnuts and pointed to my truck; he then went on his way and I went to my truck, ate some of my doughnuts, turned on my television and went to sleep.

I was on interstate 94 as my day started. I got to Taylor, Michigan where I fueled and took my long break. I was in no hurry as I would make it in time I am sure.
I left for Oshawa, Ontario just before 6:00 PM EST. No problem with Canadian customs and I was on my way up the highway 401. Got to Oshawa at 11:15 PM EST and called it a night. I just went to bed.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Columbia, Missouri)
I was awake before everybody showed it up at Tupperware this morning. I say everyone because several people unloaded my trailer. There was a whole group of people unloading. With everyone unloading, I was finished by 10:30 AM CST. I called dispatch and found I had a load from Sedalia, Missouri going to Oshawa, Ontario.
I picked up a load of wheel rims and headed for Taylor, Michigan. I went back up to do I-70 by way of highway 65. I took interstate 70 to interstate 270 over the north part of St. Louis. Once in Illinois, I took interstate 55 to the truck stop in Mclean where I stopped for my favorite meal there, a chef's salad. I also fueled as it would be close to running empty by the time I got to Taylor, Michigan.
I continue driving into the next day even though it was a violation of my time rule; today ended while I was driving.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Veterans' Day-Kingdom City, Missouri)
Being that it was a holiday, I had the day off. My kids were busy so I spent the day at the truckstop or in my tractor.
After dark I decided to drive to Columbia and park at the Tupperware dealer warehouse for the night. I got backed into the dock before a light freezing rain started. I just watched my TV, wrote, and updated my logbook...

FIRST 5YEARS:(Sunday-Fruitland, Missouri)
Woke up this Sunday morning and left the motel room and continued my drive up interstate 55. I now had a load of Tupperware going to Columbia, Missouri that is due Tuesday. As I reached the Saint Lawrence ago on interstate 270 northbound on the west side of the city. Continue the to highways 40 and 61 where I went westbound. One reaching interstate 70, I went to Kingdom City, Missouri, getting there around 2 PM CST. I stopped at "Just a Truckstop", parked the truck and called my kids. They were busy so I could not see them. I spent the rest of the day in my truck or in the truckstop...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Saturday-Jackson, Tennessee)
I was awakened at 8:00 AM CST by the unloading crew and told a which dock to back up to. They had me unloaded by 10:00 AM CST. I called dispatch to let them know why was empty and they had a load for me to pick up about three blocks from where I was.
I picked up the load event started delivering and St. Louis Monday. It had three drops on it with the second one in Peoria, Illinois.
I went up highway 412 to Dyersburg, Tennessee and got on interstate 155 and took it into Missouri and interstate 55 northbound. While running north I found I was running in front of another company truck going to Columbia, Missouri with a Tupperware load that delivered on Monday also. We talked for a while and then as I do share a motel room for the night since both of us had a lot of time to spare. While talking that night in a motel we decide this change loads with each other. We called dispatch and got loads changed and then just basically took it easy that evening, fallen asleep when we wanted to.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday-Calumet City, Illinois)
I slept most yesterday so I didn't have too good of a night's sleep. I was up and down all night but I started calling in around 8:00 AM CST and got the standard response to call back in an hour. It was at 10:00 AM CST that I got a load of corn syrup from western Chicago area going to Tennessee.
Got my load picked up and looked at my routing. After looking at the routing I determined it was going to be a bad day. I got started and went down interstate 57. I consider interstate 57 one of the most boring interstates in the United States. The ride down I-57 did not surprise me as it was once again boring. It was a most boring day as I took interstate 57 to interstate 55 in Missouri. I went south on interstate 55 true interstate 155 going to Dyersburg, Tennessee. At Dyersburg I caught highway 412 to Jackson, Tennessee. I found the plant I needed to deliver at tomorrow morning and it was about 9:00 PM CST. Oh yes, I stopped in Effingham, Illinois for fuel(118 gallos). I have a 9:00 AM CST appointment time tomorrow so I parked outside on the street. turned on my TV, and went to sleep for the night...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Thursday-traveling in Illinois)
As my day started I was heading east on interstate 80 getting close to Iowa City. I passed the quad cities and entered into Illinois continuing on interstate 80. I got to interstate 55 and went north and found the shopping center that I was to deliver at. I parked in the parking lot and waited to about 7:30 AM CST. I was instructed on where to back the truck so they could unload me. After unloading I called dispatch and told them I was taking the day off to sleep since I drove all night. I drove over to the truckstop in Calumet City(south side of Chicago) to park for the day and went to bed. I woke up after dark and visited the truckstop until midnight.

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Wednesday -Kansas City, Missouri)
I was around the terminal all day waiting for aload outside it was raining, snowing and freezing rain. The whole day look to really bad for truck driving but I was warm inside talking with other drivers that we're stuck waiting for a load.
At 5:00 PM CST, I and three other drivers were bobtailed to St Joseph, Missouri to pick up trailers in our drop yard. We all three complained to dispatch about bobtailing with bad roads and he told us that if we did not want the loads that he would get them to someone else. We all took the loads that I complained a little bit more and he's called us "fair weather truckers". What made me upset was that the last few days I handled roads that were extremely bad with conditions that made me anything than a "fair weather trucker". Now all three of us went together on the highways so we could make sure we all got there safely. We got our loads and mine was going to Chicago.
I was going to Chicago by myself so I went east on highway 36 and then north on interstate 35. Once I got the weight of the trailer on the back of my tractor the bad roads were not very difficult to handle. Once I got on interstate 35 the roads weren't too bad and I was able to keep my speed up. I got to interstate 80 and went east toward Chicago. My calendar day ended as I was closing in on Iowa City, Iowa...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Tuesday-traveling in Wisconsin)
Shortly after my day started, I went into Illinois on interstate 90. This section of the interstate roads are all toll roads all the way to Chicago. I got to the Ford plant in South Chicago and bedded down for the night as they won't let me drop the trailer till tomorrow.
In the morning I dropped a trailer and called dispatch. They had no load for me so I went to a truckstop not too far away. When I got to the truckstop I called dispatch again and they had a load for me. I was to go back to the Ford plant and pick up a load to Kansas City, Missouri. When I got to the Ford plant, I found another driver being loaded with my load. We talked in called dispatch and I got the load to Kansas City
I got the load and headed down I-57 to I-80 where I went west to interstate 55. I'd take interstate 55 south, stopping at the rest area at Funk's Grove(I like putting that in my log book) for a short break. I went on to highway 36(now interstate 72) and went west. I followed highway 36 all the way to interstate 35 and then down to our terminal in Kansas City, Missouri. I got to drop my trailer in our yard and I went to bed in my bumk....

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Monday-Bloomington,, Minnesota)
Woke up in 5:00 AM CST and founded 12 trucks parked behind me. Checked with the guard and they were getting ready to open the gates. I checked in and was told to drop my trailer in the yard, then pick up an empty trailer. I parked my truck with the trailer backed into a slot but when I went to unhook the trailer and a fifth wheel would not release the trailer. I found that the underneath of the fifth wheel was packed solid with the ice. It actually took me one and 1/2 hours of pounding the ice to get the fifth wheel working right. With last night's frustration and this frustration I was ready to quit truck driving, but I didn't.
I called dispatch when I was empty and they gave me a load of empty racks going to Chicago, Illinois. Hope I had to go to the Ford assembly plant in St. Paul to get my load. I dropped my empty trailer when I got there and found a trailer I was to take. I have to it and was ready to go when another driver and his wife pulled in. I knew the driver and his handle was RW; his wife's handle was Sissy. I told them I would wait for them but ended up helping get their trailer out of a whole. The trailer was in a whole where the water had frozen around the rubber of the tires. I help them get it out; it took awhile and there was no damage to the tires.
When we left the Ford assembly plant, we got on I-94 and headed into Wisconsin. We followed I-94 two the "Just a Truckstop" in Portage, Wisconsin where I didn't fuel and we ate. I bought a nice fifth wheel puller from another driver while at the truckstop. After we ate we headed south on interstate 90. Our day ended as we were getting close to the Illinois border...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Sunday-Bloomington, Minnesota)
Sunday and I just slepted in. Played when my computer all day and watch television there was nothing else to do. After dark, I left the motel room got in my truck and I went back to Best Buy stores warehouse. While pulling into their driveway my back wheel got caught in a snow drift. I went back and forth for some time trying to get it out: finally I got it out but it was a violent action that caused to leave a rut. I was sure I destroyed a few televisions but I had to get out. I talked to the guard at the gate and he said they would open in the morning. I was the first park in line so I just bumked in for the night...

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Saturday-Bloomington, Minnesota)
I woke up before the sun was suppose to come up. It was still when the outside with snow flurries and a lot of clouds. I and the other truck drivers waiting to get into the Best Buy store warehouse found out that the warehouse was not opening till Monday. Also, we had a huge snowdrift behind the fourth truck so we could not get to the street. The warehouse had a snowplow come and dig out the snow drift. We trucks all backed to the road and took off. I was going back to our fuel stop as I needed fuel. I got stuck on the road in the ice and snow and I could not move at all. I did not have any extra sand or anything that would help get me out. I tried all my liquids and stuff. Finally, a little pickup truck came by with sand in the bed and a shovel. A man shoveled some some sand under my tires and I was in business again. I got to our fuel stop and fueled(98 gallons). Some trucks were having trouble getting started rolling from the fuel pumps as the ground was so icy. There was a tow truck charging trucks to pull them away from the fuel island... I got rolling OK when I get fueled...
Being that I would be there till Monday I got a room at the motel for Saturday and Sunday nights. Since there was no one to clean their rooms due to the weather they gave me their rooms at half cost. I just stayed in my room that night. There was no place to go. . .

FIRST 5 YEARS:(Friday -traveling in Missouri)
And I was traveling up interstate 55 and pulled into our fuel stop at 1:30 AM CST. I put 188 gallons in my tanks to fill them up. I then drove to Hannibal, Missouri where I bedded down for the night.
I woke up around 10:00 AM CST and was on my way shortly up highway 61. As I got close to Iowa eye to highway 394 into Iowa or a small toll bridge. I took highway 394 into Iowa to highway 218 going north. It had been raining all yesterday and last night and it was continuing to rain. By that time I got to Waterloo, Iowa the rain was changing to freezing rain. I was warned that interstate 35 had downed power lines and that it would be wise to stay on highway 218 until I got to interstate 90. Boy the road sure got slick. I remember coming over a mound and there was a stalled car miles in front of me. I couldn't put my brakes on as I would slide off the road...so I had to really slow down and I was worried that I wouldn't slow down fast enough to avoid an accident. Things worked out OK.
I went up to interstate 90 where I went west to interstate 35. Followed interstate 35 north to exit 81 where I was planning to fuel. A couple cars had spun out on the ramp blocking it and I could not get off the interstate. Since I had a trailer that I was to be dropped in the customer's yard I decided to go to the customer and fuel later.
I had to be careful as the roads were really slick. I got to the customer and the guards had the gates closed. Because of the blizzard, the warehouse had shut down. I was the third truck in line that had to wait untill tomorrow. The winds outside were blowing quite hard but the snow seemed to be coming down lightly. I was low on fuel but had to wait till tomorrow to get rid of my trailer. My bunk heater was not working but my cab heater blew warm air back quite well. I just watched mike television and went to sleep that's all I could do.. . The adventure was starting...
